I was browsing through old photos from my teaching fellowship in Newark and came across reflections about money from a student’s journal, the insight really stunned me. Teachers always threw around the words “Success” and “Achievement” without painting the full picture for kids. All this reform-y jargon would trickle down to our kids, its important that teachers are careful to not send the message that success equals money or that success equals a certain level of prestige. This connects well to a TED talk that questions how success, or lack thereof is portrayed in a meritocratic- individualistic society.
Most commonly asked question “What do you do?” The myopic framing of this question, limits our self-identity to the characteristics of one’s occupation.
